Abstract

This paper describes some of the most important patterns of change in the patterns of categorization of performing practices in the music of a changing society: Mozambique. The author discusses the consequences of the transition from a colonial regime to a new independent state, and of the establishment of cultural policies by Mozambican governments. The role of radio broadcasting and influences from neighbouring South-African musical genres are also discussed.
