Abstract

Discovered in c. 1982 in the Archive of the Câmara Municipal in Elvas, where they served as binders to register books of the municipality, these musical folios respectively contain fragments of: a 12thc Gradual (Temporale), a 14thc Psalter, a 13thc Gradual (Sanctorale), and a 13thc Portuguese Breviary from the province of Braga. Each fragment is analysed in detail and its texts are fully transcribed in an Appendix.

Gil Miranda

GIL MIRANDA received his musical education at the Conservatório Nacional in Lisbon where he undertook the Curso Superior de Composição, followed by a period of study in Paris with Nadia Boulanger (1965-68). At the same time he obtained a degree in the Faculty of Law in Lisbon, with a distinction, and taught as assistant lecturer (1968-75) before pursuing his career as Professor of Music Theory in the United States at the University of California (1976-80); Dartmouth College, New Hampshire (1980-83) and the Music Conservatory at Oberlin College, Ohio (1983-2001). Among his publications is his edition of the Cancioneiro de Elvas in the series Corpus mensurabilis musicae (1987), and a book on the life and work of composer Jorge Croner de Vasconcellos (1992) and a respective catalogue raisonée (2004).
