Abstract

This research focuses on the understanding of the somatic movements necessary for the reproduction of the different bow strokes, with the goal of achieving gestural standardization of each of these articulations. Previous research shows that the bow technique represents one of the biggest challenges for violinists. Through an experimental laboratory investigation involving thirty violinists, it was possible to record—in audio, video and Motion Capture formats (MOCAP)—, a total of 1260 interpretations, the result of a careful selection of forty-two musical excerpts representing each of the bow strokes in study. All sound recordings were subject to review by a jury, which selected the best interpretation of each excerpt from group 1 (participants with MOCAP suit), the best interpretation from group 2 (participants without MOCAP suit), and the worst interpretation from both groups. From this selection were created, through the use of videos and data collected in Motion Capture, the aspired gestural standardizations—which were translated into interactive videos that allowing the observation of the various components under study of each bow stroke. By analyzing the implemented questionnaires, it was also possible to conclude that participants were generally unaware of Motion Capture Technology (90 %), and that all participants (100 %) understand that this strategy could be very useful. Thus, this study is intended not only to reflect, analyze and learn the several movements needed to perform the different bow strokes in the mainstream violin repertoire, but also in helping with the acquisition of skills for violinists and violin teachers.
